AI Eswatini at Deep Learning Indaba 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda

AI Eswatini proudly represented the Kingdom of Eswatini at the Deep Learning Indaba 2025, held in Kigali, Rwanda – a landmark gathering of Africa’s brightest minds in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The annual Indaba serves as a hub for researchers, innovators, and practitioners to share ideas, strengthen collaborations, and advance the continent’s AI capabilities.

Our team showcased Eswatini’s growing AI innovation through two powerful poster presentations:

  • Bandile Malaza presented “Advanced AI Health Management: Combining Predictive Analytics, Large Language Models, and Computer Vision for Holistic Patient Care” – a project that explores how AI can enhance healthcare outcomes. The poster earned an award for outstanding presentation, recognizing its originality and real-world relevance.
  • Khanyisile Magagula presented “Sugarcane Leaf Disease Detection Using Computer Vision for Eswatini Sugar” – a groundbreaking project aimed at supporting the agriculture industry through early disease detection and smarter crop monitoring.

Adding to the highlights, AI Eswatini Managing Director Robert Selemani took part in a panel discussion titled “Bridging the AI Compute Divide: Investing & Building AI Infrastructure in Africa.” The session featured representatives from IBM Research, GSMA, Cassava Technologies, and the Mozilla Foundation. Panelists explored critical themes around compute access, affordability, infrastructure, and responsible AI development across the continent. Robert contributed insights on expanding GPU infrastructure, promoting local innovation, and ensuring equitable access to AI resources in Africa, emphasizing that bridging the compute divide is not only a technical challenge, but also a social and economic imperative.

Beyond the panel and poster sessions, our participation strengthened AI Eswatini’s relationships with African researchers, universities, and organizations, reinforcing our mission to build a trusted, collaborative, and impactful AI ecosystem in Eswatini.

Deep Learning Indaba 2025 was not just a conference, it was a celebration of Africa’s growing AI community. We return inspired and motivated to continue driving innovation, research, and skills development at home.

Together, we are shaping the future of AI for Africa, from Eswatini to the world.
